Girona vs Rayo Vallecano

The 2025–26 LaLiga season kicked off at Montilivi on Friday, August 15, with Girona hoping to start strong in front of their home fans, but instead the night became a nightmare for goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga. In the 18th minute, a harmless back-pass from David López turned disastrous when Gazzaniga’s heavy touch gifted Jorge de Frutos an open goal. The Rayo forward calmly slotted the ball home, silencing the Girona faithful and setting the tone for a chaotic first half.

Just a minute later, the visitors struck again. Riding the momentum from their opener, Rayo carved through Girona’s unsettled defence with precision. De Frutos, already causing havoc, delivered a low cross into the box where Álvaro García was waiting to pounce. His crisp finish doubled Rayo’s advantage, leaving Girona stunned and chasing the game before it had even settled into a rhythm.

As if the night couldn’t get worse for Girona, disaster struck again before halftime. Attempting to play out from the back, Gazzaniga tried to dribble past de Frutos but was dispossessed inside the box. In his desperate attempt to recover, he fouled the Rayo forward, conceding a penalty and receiving a straight red card. Isi Palazón stepped up and confidently converted from the spot, sending Rayo into the break with a commanding 3–0 lead and Girona down to ten men.

With the match effectively out of reach, Girona shifted their focus to damage control in the second half. Despite their numerical disadvantage, the hosts showed flashes of spirit and were rewarded when young Joel Roca found space in the box to slot home a well-taken goal. It was a small consolation for a side that had been chasing shadows for much of the night, but it lifted the atmosphere briefly and showed signs of fight that the home fans appreciated.

In the end, Rayo Vallecano managed the closing stages with composure, preserving their 3–1 lead and making a statement on opening day. The visitors’ ruthlessness in capitalizing on Girona’s errors, coupled with the composure of their front line, gave them a dream start to the season. For Girona, it was a painful reminder that lapses in concentration at this level are punished severely—a lesson they will need to learn quickly if they hope to recover in the coming weeks.
