Spain opened their 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign with a commanding 3–0 win over Bulgaria at Vasil Levski National Stadium in Sofia. Right from kickoff, La Roja dictated the tempo, pressing high and moving the ball with purpose. Their early dominance paid off in the fifth minute when Mikel Oyarzabal timed his run perfectly to finish Martín Zubimendi’s clever through-ball, giving Spain the perfect start and silencing the home crowd.
The visitors doubled their advantage midway through the first half thanks to a special moment from Marc Cucurella. The Chelsea full-back pounced on a loose clearance following a corner and unleashed a crisp strike into the bottom corner, netting his first goal for the national team. That milestone goal seemed to galvanize the Spanish side even further as they swarmed Bulgaria’s defense with wave after wave of attacks.
Just minutes later, Spain struck again to all but kill the game off before halftime. Lamine Yamal, dangerous all evening, curled in a pinpoint corner that found Mikel Merino unmarked in the box. The midfielder rose highest and powered a header past the Bulgarian goalkeeper for Spain’s third of the night. By the interval, Spain had not only secured the result but also showcased their ability to turn dominance into goals.
Bulgaria attempted to respond after the break, pushing slightly higher up the pitch and forcing a couple of saves from Spain’s Unai Simón, but they were unable to break through a disciplined Spanish backline. Luis de la Fuente used the second half to rotate his squad, bringing on Rodri and Dani Carvajal, both making long-awaited returns from injury, to regain match sharpness without disrupting Spain’s control.
With the win, Spain start their Group E campaign with three points and a confidence boost, continuing their momentum as reigning European champions. Bulgaria, on the other hand, will need to regroup quickly with a tough trip to Georgia ahead. Spain now shift their focus to an enticing clash with Turkey, aiming to build on this strong performance and maintain their early lead in the group standings.
