At St. James’ Park, Newcastle United marched into the Carabao Cup fourth round with a commanding 4-1 victory over League One leaders Bradford City. Eddie Howe rotated his squad heavily, using the tie to give fringe players and youngsters valuable minutes, while still fielding enough quality to avoid a potential upset. Bradford, backed by a large travelling support, came with belief and energy, determined to make a statement against Premier League opposition.
Newcastle wasted no time asserting themselves. The breakthrough came in the 17th minute when Joelinton pounced on a loose ball inside the box and calmly slotted past the Bradford goalkeeper. Just three minutes later, Bruno Guimarães split the defence with a clever through-ball to William Osula, who showed composure to double the lead. Within 20 minutes, Newcastle were 2-0 up, playing with confidence and moving the ball at pace, leaving Bradford chasing shadows.
Bradford grew into the game after half-time as Newcastle eased off the intensity. The visitors pushed higher and pressed bravely, earning a few set pieces and threatening on the counter. Their perseverance was rewarded when striker Andy Cook — a boyhood Newcastle fan — scored in the 68th minute, sparking loud celebrations from the away end and briefly giving the underdogs hope of a comeback. The goal galvanized Bradford, who enjoyed their best spell of the match in the minutes that followed.
However, Newcastle regained control and put the game to bed late on. Substitute Miguel Almirón helped stretch the Bradford defence, and Osula added his second of the night in stoppage time to make it 3-1. Just before the final whistle, Newcastle struck again through a sweeping move that ended with a clinical finish, sealing a 4-1 scoreline that more accurately reflected their dominance over the 90 minutes.
The result sees Newcastle safely into the next round and gives Howe a timely reminder of the depth in his squad, with fringe players stepping up when called upon. For Bradford, the defeat ends their Carabao Cup run but they depart with credit, having competed bravely and even caused a few nervy moments for the hosts. Their focus will now return to maintaining their excellent League One form as they chase promotion.
