On a poignant evening in Orlando, Fluminense advanced to the semifinals of the FIFA Club World Cup with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Saudi Arabian powerhouse Al-Hilal. Before kickoff, both teams and fans stood for a minute of silence in memory of Portuguese forward Diogo Jota and his brother André Silva, deeply affecting Al-Hilal’s Portuguese players João Cancelo and Rúben Neves, who were visibly moved by the tribute.
The match itself was full of tension and contrasting styles. Fluminense, representing South America as Copa Libertadores champions, leaned on experience and organization, while Al-Hilal relied on possession and pressing under coach Simone Inzaghi. The first breakthrough came in the 40th minute when Matheus Martinelli curled a brilliant strike into the top corner, giving the Brazilian side a 1–0 lead going into halftime.
Just six minutes after the restart, Al-Hilal responded. Brazilian striker Marcos Leonardo pounced on a loose ball in the box to level the score at 1–1. For a spell, Al-Hilal looked in control, dominating possession and pushing for a second, with their 57.5% possession and 15 total shots showing their attacking intent.
But Fluminense weathered the pressure and struck back with precision. In the 70th minute, substitute Hércules stunned the crowd with a sublime cross-goal shot that flew past Yassine Bounou (Bono), putting the Brazilians ahead once more. Veteran defender Thiago Silva, at 40 years old, anchored the defense alongside 44-year-old keeper Fábio, who made several key saves to protect the lead.
Despite 12 corners and several dangerous moves in the closing stages, Al-Hilal couldn’t find another equalizer. Fluminense held firm to secure a 2–1 win and a spot in the semifinals, where they will face the winner of Chelsea vs. Palmeiras on July 8 at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.
With this win, Fluminense not only keeps their world title hopes alive but also secures a payout of over €50 million—a financial boost as well as a morale triumph. Meanwhile, Al-Hilal exit the tournament with pride, having played a strong game in emotionally heavy circumstances.
