At the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Chelsea kicked off their FIFA Club World Cup campaign with a commanding 2–0 win over LAFC in a match that showcased the gulf in quality between European and MLS contenders.
Pedro Neto opened the scoring in the 34th minute with a brilliant solo effort, cutting in and firing past Hugo Lloris to give Chelsea the early edge. Despite LAFC’s best efforts, including some promising attacks from Denis Bouanga and David Martínez, they couldn’t find a way past Robert Sánchez, who stood firm in goal.
Chelsea controlled much of the match with sharp passing and composed possession, but it wasn’t until the 79th minute that they sealed the result. Liam Delap, making his debut, made an instant impact by delivering a pinpoint cross that Enzo Fernández slotted home for the second goal.
While Chelsea looked sharp and efficient, LAFC faced an early blow when striker Nathan Ordaz was forced off after a collision with Reece James, entering concussion protocol. Though the MLS side showed fight, they struggled to match Chelsea’s intensity and depth.
The match, played in front of a surprisingly sparse crowd at the otherwise massive venue, underlined Chelsea’s intent in this tournament and left LAFC with work to do in Group D.
Chelsea now move on to face Flamengo on June 20, while LAFC prepare for a crucial encounter against Espérance.
