Tottenham Hotspur booked their place in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup with a 3-0 home win over Doncaster Rovers at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Manager Thomas Frank made significant rotations, giving opportunities to fringe players and academy prospects, including Luca Williams-Barnett and Ju’nai Byfield on the bench, while Antonín Kinský started in goal and Pedro Porro wore the armband. Doncaster, a League One side, came to London looking to upset the odds and frustrate Spurs, but the hosts asserted control early.
The breakthrough arrived in the 14th minute, and it came in spectacular fashion. Following a partially cleared corner, João Palhinha executed a stunning overhead kick from just inside the box, leaving Doncaster’s goalkeeper with no chance. The goal set the tone and settled any nerves for the home side. Just two minutes later, Spurs doubled their lead as Wilson Odobert whipped in a low cross that caused confusion in the six-yard box and was turned into his own net by defender Jay McGrath. In less than 20 minutes, Doncaster found themselves chasing a two-goal deficit.
After the early goals, Tottenham’s tempo dropped, and the match became a little disjointed. Spurs dominated possession but lacked precision in the final third, failing to carve out clear openings despite their superiority. Doncaster stayed organized and attempted to break forward when possible, finding some joy on the wings but ultimately failing to test Kinský with a clear shot on target. Tottenham used the opportunity to rotate, bringing on young talents and allowing regular starters to rest ahead of the weekend’s league fixtures.
In the second half, Doncaster continued to battle bravely, keeping the scoreline respectable for most of the period. Spurs looked comfortable but not ruthless, occasionally sloppy in midfield and allowing their opponents a few encouraging moments. However, the visitors’ lack of cutting edge meant Tottenham’s defence was rarely troubled. The hosts patiently waited for another chance to kill the game off completely.
The final blow came in stoppage time when Brennan Johnson, who had been lively throughout the second half, raced onto a pass from Lucas Bergvall and calmly slotted past the Doncaster keeper to make it 3-0. The result was a professional, if not spectacular, win for Tottenham, who advance to the next round while keeping a clean sheet. For Doncaster, it was a valuable experience against Premier League opposition and a reminder of the quality gap they must overcome to compete at this level.
