On 26 July 2025, Liverpool and AC Milan met at the new Kai Tak Sports Park in Hong Kong for a high-profile pre-season friendly that drew nearly 50,000 fans. The Italian side made the brighter start and within ten minutes Rafael Leão struck with a powerful left-footed shot after a clever setup from Christian Pulisic. Liverpool responded well and found an equaliser midway through the first half when Rio Ngumoha’s sharp footwork created space for Dominik Szoboszlai, who curled a precise finish into the top corner to make it 1–1 at the break.
The second half turned into a showcase of Milan’s counter-attacking efficiency. Leão continued to torment Liverpool’s back line, and just after the interval he carved open the defence on the left before laying the ball off for Ruben Loftus-Cheek to restore Milan’s lead. Moments later, a swift breakaway led by Alexis Saelemaekers ended with Noah Okafor calmly slotting in the third goal, leaving the Premier League side with a mountain to climb.
Liverpool fought to get back into the game, rotating heavily to give young players minutes, and their persistence paid off in stoppage time. A late surge resulted in Cody Gakpo heading home from a Konaté cross in the 93rd minute to reduce the deficit to 3–2. However, almost straight from the restart, Milan punished another defensive lapse as Okafor capitalised to score his second of the match, putting the result beyond doubt at 4–2.
Leão was the standout performer with a goal and an assist, while Okafor’s brace underlined Milan’s attacking threat. For Liverpool, Ngumoha’s lively display and Szoboszlai’s strike were positives on a day when defensive organisation was lacking. The result gave Milan confidence heading into the new season, while for Liverpool it was a valuable, if sobering, test that highlighted areas to tighten before competitive fixtures begin.
