The LNER Stadium was rocking on 23 September 2025 as Lincoln City nearly pulled off a famous Carabao Cup upset before Chelsea clawed their way back to win 2-1. Lincoln started with fearless intensity, pressing high and forcing errors from their Premier League opponents. Chelsea looked a shadow of themselves in the first half, sluggish in transition and lacking the cutting edge to break Lincoln’s compact defence. Just two minutes later, George turned provider, slipping a pass to Facundo Buonanotte, who showed composure to steer Chelsea ahead and completely flip the momentum of the tie.
Lincoln refused to go quietly. They threw men forward, peppered Chelsea’s box with crosses and long throws, and had several half-chances to equalise late on. Their energy and fight kept the Blues uncomfortable until the final whistle, forcing Chelsea’s backline to stay switched on and defend with commitment.
Chelsea ultimately survived the scare and advanced to the next round, but the performance was far from convincing. Pochettino will take heart from his young players’ impact but will know that slow starts could prove costly in bigger matches. Lincoln, meanwhile, walked off to a standing ovation, having shown they could go toe-to-toe with top-tier opposition and leaving the competition with their pride very much intact.
